Physical Prototype Rules

     ·      Set up a timer to use to time how fast you get through the track.
·        Place Kid Luge’s piece in the start box.
·        Slide Street Luge around the track as soon as the timer starts.
·        Do not fall off the track or hit any of the boxes that represent cars.
·        If a player hits an obstacle, put Kid Luge back at start and try again.  The time keeps on going.
·        Players cannot go backwards.  If players get stuck they need to head back to start with the timer still running.
·        There is a truck piece that you can slide under or move around.
o   If you slide under the truck take 3 seconds off your final time.
·        Once you cross the finish line stop the timer.

·        Write the time on a sheet to compare with other players and aim to get the lowest time.

Game Design

Game Design

Player’s Role
The player is Kid Luge who wants to be the best street luger ever.

Interaction Model
The player plays the game through the avatar Kid Luge who is riding a street luge.

Perspective
The game is in third-person.  The camera would be centered in the screen behind Kid Luge.

Setting
The world is in 3-D.  The world starts at the track’s starting point and ends at the finish line.  The player follows the on path they are on.  There will be scenery walling them in.  If they run off the street they will explode.  Time is stuck in the same place, sunny afternoon.  The street that he will be riding on is in eighties California.  The setting will look like that area with similar landscapes and buildings.  There will be pop culture references in the background as well.

Challenges the Player Confronts
Human vs Self
Human vs Environment
The player has a challenge of controlling the speed of the luge and maneuvering the luge.

Mechanics that Create Those Challenges
Obstacles on the road create the challenge of the game.

Actions the Player Takes to Overcome Them

The player must effectively steer, speed up, and/or slow down to avoid obstacles.  There will always be an opening to avoid obstacles.

Concept Design

Theme
The game is going to be a street luge simulation game where the player has to make it across the finish line without hitting any obstacles.    You are a kid practicing for a street luge race and the goal is to cross the finish line with the lowest time.  It will take place in eighties California.

Gameplay
The main character is the kid practicing his street luge skills.  If he hits anything his luge will explode.  If the player directs the kid through small areas such as under trucks or between two close cars, the player can get bonus points.  The street would have procedurally generated obstacles such as cars and turned over trash cans.  The race ends when he crosses the finish line.

Learning Context
Negative feedback is given when the player hits anything because the character explodes and dies.  Positive feedback will be given if they pass the finish line.  Difficult maneuvers such as sliding under a truck get bonus points so players need to figure out when to take chances to get those points or the play it safe.  Players will use the arrow keys to simulate the way a luge moves.
